THAT WAS FUN!!
This is a really a theatre tour - but we heard that this place was a great little venue that has had performances from many great acoustic artists and, like Café Amer, it has a reputation for great music. Most of all it has 'Street Credibility' so we were more than happy to be working there.
We arrived in Venlo and navigated our way into the shopping precinct where we came to a grinding halt, it was a maze of little streets and we had no idea which way to go. Luckily Bert, our boss for the night, was contactable by mobile phone and guided us in.
We won't call it small - we'll call it cosy!! The stage area was very cosy and we were tripping over ourselves as we tried to set up for the sound check - see photo of Matt struggling to plug himself in!!
Bert is apparently a very good player himself and although we had a few problems with a particular frequency on the guitar we sorted it out with his help and got a good sound. Then came the lighting man 'Toine' who was an absolute star - what a character - he set up the spotlights and did a great job. As we were joking on stage he was busy joking with the lights - turning us green and flashing traffic light colours. I'm only sorry that I didn't manage to get a photo of him.
The audience were special - they listened intently, joined in with great enthusiasm when asked and they were great 'warriors'. We even have a warrior at the front of the crowd photo...
We learned from a journalist, Twan Mientjes, that this particular café is the place where sculptors, writers, musicians and artists of all kinds get together - it felt like it too.
They gave us such a good time that we gave our best too and had a ball. I think we're going to be back there in Spring and I hope that we can repeat the experience because it's one we will not forget. We got to bed at 5am and now it's 1pm so we're just getting everything together to set off for Steenwijk.
