Concert Diary 2007

Radio Rijnmond, Rotterdam, Session - 7th May

Matt Barnhoorn writes - A couple of weeks ago, Chris was over in Holland to work on the sleeves of five albums with Walter. While he was over, he and I also worked on the promotion of the Spring Tour. One day, Chris and Nico, who promotes the concert in Schiedam for this tour, went down to Radio Rijnmond to do an interview for Hans van Vliet. What meant to be a ten-minutes-interview, ended up to be an interview for two hours. Both Hans and Chris had a great time, insulting each other's shirts, un-politically correct German accents and the whole thing ended with Chris doing a very strange weather forecast). In short, put two monsters together in a room with two microphones. After the show Chris and Nico got invited back, this time with reinforcement - Linda and me.

A cheery Stefano

Today was the day. We had to be in Schiedam at 10.00 am, which meant getting up at an early hour - as we've told earlier, when you're on tour your internal clock sort of changes. Given that we had to travel thru rush hour, we decided we had to be up at 7.30 am. Ouch...

But we succeeded! We were driving on the scheduled time and even arrived 5 minutes earlier then we expected. Not bad at all.

We picked up Nico at his house and the four of us went up to Rotterdam to the studio of Radio Rijnmond.

We rolled up at the studio, where the receptionist welcomed us. She directed us to the right studio and it all took off from there. Those who listen to Radio Rijnmond will know that Hans van Vliet is known for his tact and diplomacy. As we opened the door we got welcomed with: "What the bloody hell are you doing here?"

We all gave it our best shots - note the black eye (a trick of the camera really).

As we took our instruments out of their cases, Stefano and Dennis helped us with plugging in the instruments. That was it basically, 'cause after a quick tuning-up-round we were in the air. There was no time to do a sound check.

After two songs it was time for the interview, which contained more sarcasm. This time Hans was particularly impressed with his own shirt and Chris ensured him that that style would come back! We played them another two songs and before we knew it we were at the end of the program.

Hans and Dennis invited us to come along to the café next to the studio. An invitation we happily accepted!

The situation there could be described as a chimpanzees' tea party. A chimp wouldn't know whether to put salt and pepper on food or an umbrella... neither did Chris. So Hans ended up with a 'seasoned' brolly.

Chimps at the party

He was showing disdain by brushing his teeth with a toothbrush dipped in coffee. I'm sure the staff was really relieved to see us leave.

We said goodbye to Hans and Dennis at the door and got ourselves off, heading towards Soest again.

It was a great day!
